The Source of the Name Zonguldak There are various rumors about where the name Zonguldak comes from.

The area where Zonguldak city center is located was formerly a swamp at the mouth of the Üzülmez Stream. The settlement, known as "Sandraka / Sandrake" in antiquity, was named after Sandra Stream (Üzülmez / Zonguldak Creek). According to another view, the word "Zonguralık, Zunguralık, Zongalık, Zungalık", which means "reeds, swamps", has changed into Zonguldak over time because the region is covered with reeds. The assumption that reinforces this view is that it comes from the word "pulsating" meaning "shivering place", which is a symptom of malaria disease caused by reeds and swamps. According to another rumor, the city got its name from the Turkish pronunciation of "Zone Ghuen Dagh", which means Göldağı section or region, as a result of the French and Belgian companies that operated the quarries first took the Göldağı location next to the city as a landmark.
